Peter Roselle: Freed From Slavery to the Fear of Death (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Peter Roselle: Freed From Slavery to the Fear of Death (Hebrews 2:14-15) This service was held on 3/22/2020, early in the COVID-19 crisis in America, an unprecedented time in our history where millions of Americans were living in fear of dying from the coronavirus.
Quotes: Genesis 3:3-4 “God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die. You will not certainly die," the serpent said to the woman.” It’s true that Adam and Eve did not die when they ate from the tree, but they brought death into the Garden. That's the big failure in the garden. Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death.”
They didn't die when they ate the fruit but they brought death into the Garden. The only way to avoid the death brought about by the entrance of sin, is through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Christ. Hebrews 2:15 talks about all of humanity living in “slavery to the fear of death.” As Christians we have the power to be delivered from this slavery!

Be blessed.
Remember: you have been blessed to be a blessing. (Genesis 12:2)
Pay it forward!

1 Samuel 30:6 (ESV)
“But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”
That's what we need to do right now.
That's the kind of battlefield mentality that we need right now.
No matter what's going on around us we take our strength
from the “true north.”
God’s compass always points to true north.
We don't know what the future holds,
but we know who holds our future.
We’re not going to allow our faith to fail.
Luke 18:8
When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"
You need to make some tough decisions.
You're not going to make good decisions if you're hijacked by fear.
You need to be at peace to make the right decisions.
John Paul Jackson was here, and said,
“Peace is the potting soil of revelation.”
We need revelation now more than ever.
We're facing decisions we’ve never faced before.
If you're not at peace you'll make bad decisions.
Hebrews 2:14 (NIV)
“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in
their humanity so that by his death he might break the
power of him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil
and free those who all their lives were held in slavery
by their fear of death.”
If we go back to Genesis, we see the serpent
telling Eve,
Genesis 3:1
"Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any
tree in the garden'?"
Genesis 3:3
God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree
that is in the middle of the garden, and you must
not touch it, or you will die.'"
Genesis 3:4
"You will not certainly die," the serpent said to the woman.
It’s true that Adam and Eve did not die when they
ate from the tree, but they brought death into the Garden.
That's the big failure in the garden.
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death.”
They didn't die when they ate the fruit
but they brought death into the Garden.
From that point on a war was
established between God and the sin of humanity.
The only way to avoid the death brought about
by the entrance of sin, is through the sacrificial
death and resurrection of Christ.
No other thing can redeem us but the blood of Jesus.
He took the punishment we deserved.
Hebrews 2:14-15 starts by warning us that
because we are God's children in this sinful state,
inherited from Adam and Eve, Jesus needed to
come as a man, made of flesh and blood.
He had to live a sinless life in a sinful world.
We know that He doesn't sin even though He's tempted.
Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize
with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted
in every way, just as we are--yet he did not sin.
When Jesus was taken to the cross and says,
“Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”
The last thing He says is
John 19:30
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished."
With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
That was the first time in history a
human being lived from birth to death
as an adult without sinning.
This was God’s plan all along.
He wanted fellowship with us in a perfect Garden, free from sin.
When Jesus says, “It is finished,” He's saying, in effect,
the cycle of death has now been broken because somebody
lived a sinless life and resurrected from the dead to defeat death.
When Jesus gave up His spirit, it released power from
heaven, so strong that it created earthquakes,
tore the veil in the temple and caused the dead to come alive.
Matthew 27:51-52
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two
from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split
and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people
who had died were raised to life.
