Coronavirus outbreak: WHO says lifting restrictions too soon ‘could lead to a deadly resurgence’

Coronavirus outbreak: WHO says lifting restrictions too soon ‘could lead to a deadly resurgence’ World Health Organization Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during Friday’s coronavirus briefing that some countries are starting to lift stay-at-home restrictions too soon.

He said that WHO wants to see those restrictions lifted, but lifting them too early could “lead to a deadly resurgence.”

“The way down could be as deadly as the way up if not managed properly,” he said.

Dr. Tedros expressed concerns over the spread of COVID-19 in rural areas in African countries, saying “we anticipate a hardship for already overstretched health systems particularly in rural areas which normally lack the resources of those in big cities.”

He called on the G20 group which expressed huge support to Africa in its last meeting, saying that support “must be expedited” even though the numbers in Africa are relatively small but accelerating.

Dr. Tedros wished the best for British prime minister Boris Johnson after he was moved out of ICU and continues to recover from COVID-19.
