'Ambitious' COVID-19 targets 'need to be dropped' for the sake of the economy

'Ambitious' COVID-19 targets 'need to be dropped' for the sake of the economy The Australian’s Adam Creighton says forcing the shut-down of so many businesses for an extended period of time “is too large a price to pay”.

“I think here in NSW there is zero evidence the more extreme elements of the shut-down actually work,” he said.

Yet “if you take the words of our leaders at face value we will have another four weeks of this before there will be any sort of review,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

Mr Creighton said while there positive cases may spike when restrictions are lifted, people might “have to be prepared to live with a slightly higher rate of infections”.

“The idea we can completely destroy this virus is a little bit ambitious and naive… and the full eradication target is unrealistic,” he said.
