Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed an executive order on Friday that stops debt collectors from seizing federal stimulus checks. This is called garnishment folks... when someone has access to your money and you owe a debt.

This is something creditors can legally do given neither Congress nor the Treasury Department took steps to ensure the checks are exempt from seizure. SO states are having to take matters into their own hands. Brown’s order protects the stimulus checks, which can be up to $1,200 for an individual, from garnishment the way other federal aid is, like Social Security, disability, and veterans’ benefits.

Earlier this week, the governors of Illinois and Washington state also signed orders to protect stimulus checks from garnishment.

Many of you about to receive an additional 600 a week. The $2.2 trillion stimulus package signed into law last month will allow people to receive an extra $600 a week in unemployment benefits for up to four months — on top of the amount they get from the state. This will go through July of this year. But states have to set this up and get payments out... so right now 29 states are set up and disbursing these additional payments... the other states still have to get their act together. Basically the states have to get their software updated to handle this. Why the heck is it taking so long? They signed this bill into law at the end of March.
